The show's original, un-aired pilot featured a cynical, tough character named Katie, played by Amanda Walsh. When CBS passed on the pilot, showrunners Chuck Lorre and Bill Prady rewrote the character as the bubbly, warm neighbor Penny and cast Kaley Cuoco.

Mirroring their characters' on-screen romance, Kaley and Johnny Galecki (who played Leonard Hofstadter) secretly dated from 2007 to 2009. They managed to keep their relationship entirely hidden from the press and cast, and remain very close friends today.

In 2010, Kaley broke her leg in a horseback riding accident, forcing writers to write her out of two episodes. When she returned, she was filmed behind kitchen counters or seated to hide her cast and avoid putting weight on her recovering leg.

Kaley is a passionate advocate for pit bulls, a breed she feels is unfairly discriminated against. She works closely with the Humane Society of the United States to educate the public and fight laws that ban specific dog breeds.

During her severe horseback riding accident in 2010, a spooked horse stepped on her leg, causing a compound fracture. Emergency surgery was required, leaving her with a metal plate and twenty pins holding her bones together.

When Kaley received her star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2014, it was placed at 6621 Hollywood Boulevard. Coincidentally, it sits directly adjacent to the star of James Garner, who played her grandfather on 8 Simple Rules.

Before her massive sitcom success, Kaley showcased her vocal talents by voicing Brandy Harrington, a pampered canine stuck in the Amazon rainforest, in the Disney Channel animated series Brandy & Mr. Whiskers from 2004 to 2006.

In 2017, Kaley was browsing upcoming books on Amazon and read a one-paragraph summary of Chris Bohjalian's unpublished novel. She immediately contacted her agent and purchased the television rights herself, which led to the hit HBO Max series.
